Proximity Card vs Magnetic Card

From almost the very beginning, magnetic cards and proximity cards have coexisted. Magnetic cards always kept the same ISO size and ABA format for time attendance while proximity cards were thicker and 10 times more expensive due to the technology used 15 years ago, credit cards has always been magnetic and this has been a definitive reason why the magnetic cards has always had a very reasonable price.
High coercivity cards are completely secure, and are very difficult to erase but the fact that the magnetic card must be swiped in front of the reader physically touching it produces a certain erosion of the card and the reader that makes advisable to replace the cards every two years.
Since , approximately  5 years ago the proximity cards also called rfid  cards has lowered its price dramatically being almost similar to the price of magnetic cards , but with the big difference the proximity cards has no erosion because there is no physical contact with the time clock. Next will be summarized the differences between Magnetic and Proximity cards:

Magnetic Cards:
  Advantages:

Uses standard format ABA , (track 2)
Rewritable, with the desired numbering.
Fastest way of clocking
Low cost

  Disadvantages:
Erosioned by the use
The magnetic reader must be replaced every 500.000 clockings
Easy to duplicate.

  Proximity Cards (RFID):

Advantages
No erosion at all
No contact between the proximity card and the clock.
Not easy to duplicate the serial numbers.
Terminal is tougher than the swipe card terminals

Disadvantages
Serial number in the cards is usually preconfigured.
RFID cards are a bit more expensive than magnetic cards

KTime promotes the proximity cards and proximity terminals because its maintenance needs are null and duration is not limited by the card reader's life.
KTime keeps the price of the terminal and the price of the rfid cards exactly the same as the prices for magnetic cards and terminals, we advice to use only magnetic cards when compatibility with existing terminals or equipments is needed.

Traditionally when talking about proximity it is believed that clock in occurs when coming near the time clock , this is not desirable .
In access control it is advisable that the door opens when the card bearer is at 6 feet from the door but not in time attendance.
It is very important to avoid undesired clocking when the card bearer comes near the time recorder.
KTime clocks only clock in when the bearer shows the rfid card at only 1/2 inchs of distance from the clock , son undesired clocking is quite avoided.

Ktime offers two models of RFID time clocks : K35x standard time attendance clock and the K45x the advanced time recorder , the same models but with magnetic card reader are K35M and K45m
